Durango Colorado is the county seat of La Plata County in Southwest Colorado. The town was incorporated in 1881 and a population of 16,887 in 2010. La Plata County has a population of 43,941.
The town sits comfortably on the transition from the high Rocky Mountains and the desert southwest.
Durango sits in the heart of the Animas Valley at 6512 feet in elevation surrounded by the San Juan Mountains that sports peaks that rise over 14,000 feet in elevation.
The town is served by the scenic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and highway 160 and highway 550.
