Fort Lewis College is a public college sitting on a mesa overlooking Durango, Colorado. As the name implies, Fort Lewis was established as a US Army Fort in 1880.
The fort was decommissioned in 1891 and turned into an Indian School. The Indian School system did not fare well and by 1910 the federal government deeded the land to Colorado with the provision that it be used for education.
Fort Lewis (events) gradually expanded from a high school into a college of agriculture and mining. In 1956, Fort Lewis A&M moved from the old fort grounds into Durango.
